• The best distance between the lags for the floor of the boards

    01.10.2021

The distance between the lags for the floor from the boards should be chosen according to the expected loads on the flooring, the functionality of the room, the thickness of the flooring. Wooden flooring for the garage is not the best solution. Its main advantage is the convenience of performing work during the repair of the machine. It is rather problematic to lie down on a concrete or earthen surface for a long time, especially in the cold season.

Wood can change its dimensions under the influence of temperature and humidity. Over time, gaps form between the boards.

The question of the material to be used for the flooring should preferably be decided before starting construction. At this stage, you can calculate the width of the foundation so that after installing the walls there is free space on which you can lay the logs. It is also desirable to determine the height of the foundation under the gate to align with the plane of the flooring.

The distance between the lags will primarily depend on the thickness of the boards used for flooring. Approximate dimensions are shown in table 1. Be sure to take into account the weight, the number of cars that will be placed in the garage. When using cargo vehicles, be aware of the possibility of entry of loaded vehicles.

If a viewing hole is planned in the garage, it is advisable to increase the number of supporting elements on the sides between the ditch and the walls of the building. When pouring the walls of a concrete repair pit, it is advisable to calculate the height of the walls for laying the log. The resulting free space can be sewn up with lumber, securing it to the ends of the bars.

For the installation of wooden floors, softwood should be chosen, which is less susceptible to moisture and decay. The best option would be to use larch or other hardwoods, but the cost of such floors will increase significantly. All parts must be treated with special solutions that protect against decay and reduce the degree of fire hazard.

After the installation of floors, it is desirable to paint or treat the surface with a varnish that protects against the penetration of fuel, lubricants and other liquids into the wood.

    Lag installation scheme

    Typical device methods

The lag can be installed on an earthen surface or a reinforced concrete screed. When refurbishing, wood flooring can be laid over the old wood or concrete flooring. When laying boards on an old wooden coating, its strength should be checked over the entire surface of the room. If the condition is satisfactory, without significant displacements and large rotten areas, the boards can be laid with a second layer.

When laying on a concrete base, even with a good quality coating, it is desirable to lay logs. For logs, you can use boards with a thickness of 40-50 mm. Fixing the flooring directly to the concrete base is not desirable. This method can damage the concrete, violate the integrity of the pour. During operation, the fastening can weaken from temperature changes and significant mechanical loads, the concrete will crumble.

The device on the ground surface requires preparatory work. From the height of the future floor, soil should be selected by about 40-50 cm. Then a layer of sand is poured, the thickness of the backfill is approximately 15-15 cm. The sand should be slightly moistened and compacted. In the absence of a mechanized tool, you can use the old-fashioned way. At the end of a piece of timber or logs 10-15 cm thick, 80-100 cm long, a handle from a bar is attached. In the absence of a thick beam, a thinner one can be used. At the second end, a piece of board should be fixed, which will expand the impact area. For weighting, you can fix some pieces of iron. A layer of gravel is arranged in a similar way. Before backfilling, it is desirable to arrange a layer of waterproofing with an overlap on the foundation.

Logs are laid on the prepared surface. First, you should lay the timber at the rear wall and the gate, align them in level in the transverse direction and with each other. Then you need to pull the cords along the side walls along the upper surface of the beam and continue laying, maintaining the lag step. After laying all the beams, once again check the level in the longitudinal and transverse directions. After making sure that there are no distortions, you can lay the floor. The gaps between the lags can be covered with expanded clay or insulation with appropriate protection against moisture.

The device of a wooden floor in the garage will create comfortable conditions for car repairs even in cold weather. But the service life of such floors with intensive use is limited, especially when operating heavy vehicles.
